Busting some common dental myths-Part I

  • Tooth removal can weaken eyesight-

There is absolutely no connection that removal of a tooth can lead to a weak eyesight.

  • Keeping a clove  reduces tooth ache or cures cavity

Keeping a clove in region of toothache will neither cure toothache nor heal dental cavities. There is no such natural process in which decayed cavities are healed by itself.  Proper treatment done by a professional like removal of decayed part of tooth followed by restoration of lost part. Undergoing root canal treatment becomes necessary when there is severe persistent pain or abscess (pus) in a particular region followed by taking appropriate radiographs.

  • The harder the brush, the cleaner the teeth-

A hard brush will do no good to you teeth but will rather worsen your teeth. It will result in severe wear of top most layer of teeth i.e the enamel. Loss of enamel can expose the underlying dentin and cause sensitivity (to hot or cold fluids). Use of soft or medium toothbrush and use of correct brushing technique will help maintain proper oral hygiene.

  • Regular use of tooth powder-

Tooth powder contain abrasive agents that can lead to wear of tooth enamel which can lead to sensitivity to hot or cold fluids. It is most commonly seen that people using toothpowder on a daily basis have sensitivity and exposed dentin. Use of a tooth cleaning agent and toothbrush is essential for a morning tooth cleanse along with an antiplaque mouthwash and regular flossing will help to maintain a good oral health care routine.

  • Professional cleaning/ Scaling will lead to loose teeth-

Most healthy adults require professional cleaning or scaling atleast once every six months.Even when scaling is not required, atleast a regular check up once in six months is of prime importance. Scaling should be done with caution in teeth with weak enamel, eroded teeth, fluorosis because it may enlarge the surface defects.
