Busting some common dental myths- Part II

  • Sugar causes cavities.

Sugar, in itself does not cause cavities. Rather it’s the bacteria that gather in colonies to eat that sugar. Foods having a sticky consistency attracts bacteria to thrive on and around teeth. These bacteria produce acids that promotes tooth decay. It is always advisable to rinse your mouth after meals to reduce acid and plaque build up.

  • Flossing is not necessary.

Flossing is absolutely essential for maintaining good oral health. Brushing only removes plaque deposits on the surface and not those between teeth. It is actually the space between the teeth which is of critical importance because plaque in the interproximal area can cause inflammation in the gums.

  • White teeth are healthy teeth.

The tooth color ranges from pale yellow to white to slightly greyish. The color is due to the underlying dentin. White teeth do not necessarily mean healthy teeth. They do have their own set of problems. Whitening teeth can lead to whiter teeth without actually addressing the problem of teeth discoloration.

  • Charcoal toothpaste is better.

In general use, charcoal is used as an adsorption agent. During brushing, the toothpaste comes in contact with the teeth for only a minute or so.So, it  hardly does the work of adsorption. Any toothpaste (except senstivity) will just do the work of cleaning the teeth by creating a foam.

  • Kids don’t need brushing.

Poor oral health at an early age can lead to lifelong complications. Kids should start brushing under the supervision parent/guradian as early as possible
